What is an AI-ready website — and does your business need one?
An AI-ready website is one whose content, structure and metadata are explicitly built so large language model assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Apple Intelligence — can read it, understand it, and confidently cite or recommend the business when users ask conversational questions. It is the next evolution of SEO, and it matters now because AI assistants already serve as a first port of call for millions of buying decisions every day.
Why AI-ready matters in 2025
Search behaviour has changed. Increasingly, customers ask ChatGPT 'who's the best plumber in Manchester for emergency boiler repairs?' rather than typing a keyword into Google and scrolling through 10 blue links. The assistant returns a direct answer — and only the businesses whose websites are structured to be cited get mentioned.
If your site is invisible to LLMs, you're invisible to that conversation. And the conversation is growing fast: Perplexity reported over 230 million queries per month by late 2024, ChatGPT's web-search rollout has expanded to free users, and Google's AI Overviews now appear above traditional search results for billions of queries.
What makes a website AI-ready
Three things, broadly:
1. Structure AI can read — semantic HTML, JSON-LD schema (Organization, Service, FAQPage, LocalBusiness), and a llms.txt file at the root that summarises your business in plain language.
2. Crawler permissions — your robots.txt explicitly allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Applebot and Googlebot-Extended. Many default templates block these silently.
3. Content AI can quote — direct-answer paragraphs at the top of every page, conversational FAQ blocks, specific numbers and credentials, clear entity mentions (your business name, services, locations) repeated in natural language.
Does your business need this?
If your customers research before they buy — and almost all do — yes. Local service businesses (plumbers, dentists, solicitors, accountants) are seeing the earliest impact, because conversational queries like 'best dentist near me for implants' are exactly the kind of question AI assistants love to answer.
The good news: the same work that makes your site AI-ready also tends to improve traditional Google rankings, conversion rates and accessibility. There's no trade-off.
